What Does Dishwasher Salt Do?
Dishwasher salt regenerates the built-in ion exchange water softener, which removes magnesium and calcium ions from the water. Without softened water, limescale builds up on internal components and on glasses.
What Does Rinse Aid Do?
Rinse aid reduces the surface tension of water, causing it to sheet off dishes rather than form droplets. This prevents water spots and helps dishes dry faster.
How Often Should You Top Up?
- Salt: When the salt indicator light comes on — typically every 4–8 weeks depending on water hardness
- Rinse aid: When the rinse aid light comes on — typically every 2–4 weeks
Can You Use All-in-One Tablets Instead?
All-in-one tablets contain salt and rinse aid substitutes. They work adequately in soft water areas, but in hard water areas (most of England) dedicated salt and rinse aid will give better results and protect the machine better.
